ECG TEST

Rama Pathology Clinic

An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) test is a diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of the heart. The test is used to detect and diagnose various heart conditions, such as heart attack, arrhythmia, and heart failure.

During an ECG test, electrodes are placed on the patient’s chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are connected to an ECG machine, which records the electrical activity of the heart as it beats. The test is non-invasive and typically takes about 5-10 minutes to complete.

The ECG test produces a graph that shows the electrical activity of the heart. The graph is called an ECG trace, and it shows the electrical activity of the heart in different stages, such as the P wave, QRS complex, and T wave. These different stages represent the different electrical signals that occur as the heart beats.

The test can help detect conditions such as:

  • Heart attack
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart valve problems
  • Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias)
  • Heart failure
  • Enlargement of the heart muscle
  • Damage to the heart muscle due to disease or injury

It’s considered a safe test, with no major risks, but in some cases, the patient may experience mild skin irritation due to the placement of the electrodes on the skin.
